These are great shots! I was David’s pianist that night, and the weird thing is that for the 2nd and 3rd photos, the photographer must have been right behind me (or had a remote camera hidden in the grand piano), because this is exactly the perspective I saw everything from. Freaky!!

Ha! That’s great, Val – thanks for stopping by. Did you get to have some good banter with David?

If you mean banter onstage, no, it was strictly his gig, but yes we had lots of conversation over the couple of days we worked together.

Well, he sang three songs. “A Penny in My Pocket” which was a song for Van der Gelder cut from HELLO DOLLY…my personal favorite of the three. Then Cole Porter’s “Dream Dancing” from a 1941 Astaire film and “Laughing Matters” from the musical WHEN PIGS FLY. He told the audience of his dad’s performances in area theater productions and read from some of his father’s reviews. He also donated three great items for the live auction which garnered well over $1,000.
I can also tell you that though I am friends with his former local organ teacher, I asked him who he studied piano with, wondering if we had the same teacher. (We grew up in adjacent towns) He told me who it was (not the same, but I know who she was) and that she was a huge Mets fan. If a game was being televised during his lesson, she’d have her Mets cap on and the TV turned on in the next room. Every so often, she’d subtly lean back to watch behind him! HA!!

Also, I can tell you what a thrill it was to work with someone who when wanting something played differently, didn’t just vaguely describe it, but sat at the keyboard and demonstrated.
This was my second time working with him and I can attest that he is a brilliant, generous and nice guy!
